With less than a week of the transfer window to go, Liverpool have still yet to bring in a new centre back.
Injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have heightened the need for a new defender at Anfield, but it doesn’t look like one will be coming in.
The Athletic report that Liverpool did ask about signing Sokratis Papastathopoulos on a free transfer following his release from Arsenal, having worked with Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund.
Sokratis has instead gone back to Greece with Olympiacos, but another former Klopp favourite has now become available.
Turkish side Denizlispor have released Neven Subotic, who managed just five games and one goal for the club having arrived last summer.
The 32-year-old has again suffered injury concerns, but his new availability has left some wondering whether he could end up at Liverpool just to ease their defensive woes.
Subotic not only starred for Klopp at Dortmund, but also with Mainz as Klopp took him from club to club in 2008.
There is an argument to be made that having somebody like Subotic, who knows Klopp’s style and system, even just until the end of the season could be a major boost.
Still, Subotic is not the player he was; injuries have damaged him, his pace has diminished, and there’s no guarantee that he could be any better than Rhys Williams or Nat Phillips at this point, so we’re ruling that it’s unlikely we’ll see him head to Anfield.
