The Spartak Moscow winger was a threat throughout as Holland lost narrowly against Italy – could Tottenham Hotspur renew their interest this summer?
Tottenham Hotspur have bought enough erratic wingers to last a lifetime in the last few seasons alone. In fact, those who expected Georges-Kevin N’Koudou to thrive where fellow Ligue 1 import Clinton N’Jie failed will have been hugely disappointed.
Despite the Marseille youngster supposedly being set for a medical in mid-July, Spurs only rubber stamped one of the summer’s most drawn-out deals on transfer deadline day. After 36 minutes of Premier League action spread out over five substitute appearances, they may wish they hadn’t bothered.
However, reports linking Quincy Promes to a move to the Premier League would make Spurs’ swoop for N’Koudou appear comparatively snappy. According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur were interested in the £11 million-rated wideman last summer while the likes of Liverpool have been linked since his formative years in the Eredivisie.
A tally of 38 goals in 79 games from the wing at Russian giants Spartak Moscow is more than enough to justify interest from abroad. But, to anyone who watched The Netherlands’ crisis deepen with a 2-1 friendly defeat to Italy in Amsterdam on Tuesday, it will have become apparent why Promes has caught Spurs’ eye.
Azzurri centre-back Alessio Romagnoli may be credited with The Dutch opener after the ball rebounded in off his knee from point blank range but it was Promes’ approach work which opened up Italy’s usually impenetrable three-man backline.
Cutting in from the left onto his dangerous right foot, Promes combined sharply with Davy Klaassen on the edge of the box before fizzing the ball into the six-yard area. Romagnoli, quite literally, didn’t know what hit him.
The goal came just a few minutes after the 25-year-old Promes had whipped a pinpoint cross onto the head of Jeremain Lens, forcing Matteo Darmian into some rather desperate last-ditch defending.
In truth, the winger was a menace throughout, arguably The Netherlands’ most lively attacker in the first half. It’s only a small sample but Promes already looks an upgrade on N’Koudou and N’Jie.
