Newcastle United, Middlesbrough and Cardiff City reportedly want to sign Matt Phillips of West Bromwich Albion in the summer transfer window.

With West Bromwich Albion having been relegated from the Premier League, Matt Phillips has been linked with moves away, with Newcastle United, Middlesbrough and Cardiff City reported to be interested in the former Queens Park Rangers attacker.

The Scotland international, who can operate as a winger or as a striker, has been on the books of West Brom since 2016, and the former QPR and Blackpool has done quite well in the Premier League.

Phillips has proved himself in the Premier League and in the Championship, and there is no surprise that Newcastle, Middlesbrough and Cardiff all are interested in signing the Baggies winger, according to The Daily Mail.

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock has suggested that he will not make a move for Phillips, revealing that West Brom want as much as £15 million as transfer fee for the 27-year-old.

The Birmingham Mail quotes Warnock as saying about Phillips: “I was [interested] until I found he was £15m.

“It’s never been on the agenda, one phone call I made about him six weeks go. It finished at the end of that conversation.”

Expensive signing?

With Cardiff now seemingly out of the race for Phillips, Newcastle and Middlesbrough could now be set for a head-to-head battle for the West Brom winger.

A transfer fee of £15m does sound a lot, especially for a player who is technically in the Championship.
