It may be a bold call to nominate a mid-table Championship club boss as a manager of the season contender, but Cardiff City’s Neil Warnock has worked his magic again in the second tier of English football.
The 68-year-old was hired with the Bluebirds sitting in the bottom three of the Championship, having won just two out of their opening 11 league fixtures, and the turnaround has been remarkable.
While the play-offs are realistically out of Cardiff’s reach, with the Bluebirds 12 points behind sixth placed Sheffield Wednesday, the fact the play-offs are even mentioned is testament to Warnock’s work in Wales.
Cardiff now sit 12th in the Championship table, just four points behind 10th placed Barnsley, in a position that seemed completely unimaginable with roughly a quarter of the season gone.

All Warnock’s done is instil a back to basics approach at Cardiff, focusing on shoring the defence up and bringing in players that Warnock knows will give the club maximum effort whenever they wear the Cardiff shirt.
It sounds so simple, but ultimately football is a simple game – play people in their correct positions, play a formation where everyone knows where everyone is, and make sure players know their jobs. Warnock’s turned it into a fine art, and Cardiff are so much better for it.
