The former Sheffield United boss is looking forward to facing his old side next season.
Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock
Former Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock has commented on the job done by Chris Wilder at Bramall Lane.
Wilder’s Blades secured their place in next season’s Championship with a win at his old side Northampton Town of all places.
It’s taken six years and and five permanent bosses to lift United out of the third tier and Warnock – who is now in charge of Cardiff City – is happy to have his boyhood club for company next term.
“It’ll be good to go (back to Bramall Lane),” the Sheffielder told Talksport on Tuesday. “I contacted Chris when they got promotion, ‘cause he’s… I’m not saying he’s like me, but he’s a Blade. He knows what it’s about, you’ve got to care a bit. It is slightly different at Sheffield.”
United have been by far and away the best team in League One this season, evidenced by their nine-point advantage over second-placed Bolton Wanderers.
And according to Warnock, the Blades can carry their momentum into the second tier with the help of one or two additions.
“He’s done that hard bit and they can do well next year,” he added. “The Championship’s difficult but they’ve got great backing up there with the fans, and they’ll get behind them.
Sheffield United fans celebrate their side’s promotion
“One or two additions in the summer (and) I think they’ll do alright. That’s why they’ll probably be hoping we do well on Friday (against rivals Sheffield Wednesday) because they’d like to see a Sheffield derby back on the fixture list, I’m sure.”
United and Wednesday, who remain on course for a top-six finish in the Championship, have not appeared in the same division since 2012, when the Owls pipped their neighbours to second in League One.
Former Blades defender Wilder left Bramall Lane shortly before Warnock’s arrival as manager in 1999.
