Aitor Karanka is the odds on favourite to land the Leeds United job and replace Garry Monk.

SkyBet have Karanka at 1/5 on to get the vacant post, having led the running ever since Monk’s surprise departure.

Karanka has a reputation to rebuild after his spell at Middlesbrough ended sourly, sacked with a handful of games to go with the club staring Premier League relegation in the face.

Boro went onto be relegated regardless, leaving them back at square one after Karanka led them to promotion in the first place.

The Spaniard would have the backing of former Leeds United head coach Neil Redfearn, who defended him in a radio interview earlier this year.

Speaking to Radio Yorkshire, reported Inside Futbol back in March, Redfearn said: “I think Karanka is a little bit misunderstood.

“I think he wears his heart on his sleeve. He’s a very talented football man and I think he understands the game.

“Listen, the Premier League is the best league football in the world. You’re talking about Italian football, Spanish football, it’s nowhere near the Premier League. The sides that get promoted, by and large they find it tough. It’s a difficult division to survive in.”

Karanka’s biggest problem at Middlesbrough last season was his team’s inability to score goals.

At Leeds he would hope to have the tools to rectify that, with Championship top scorer Chris Wood at his disposal.
