Former Leeds United head coach Neil Redfearn has told Radio Yorkshire, as quoted by Inside Fulbol, that Sunderland need to get relegated to the Championship.
Sunderland are playing in the Premier League this season, but they are struggling at the moment.
David Moyes’s side are currently at the foot of the league table with just two points from seven matches.
The Black Cats have flirted with relegation for the past few years, and there is a very good chance that they could lose their top-flight status by the end of the 2016-17 campaign.
Former Leeds head coach Redfearn, who is 51 years of age, believes that for Sunderland to progress in the coming years, they need to get relegated.
“They probably need to go [down] to be honest with you, to start again,” Redfearn told Radio Yorkshire, as quoted by Inside Futbol, about Sunderland.
“They won’t think that and the supporters definitely won’t, but it might be better for them if they go down and have a season where they are a big club and come back up out of the Championship. At this moment in time they seem to be struggling every season.”
Redfearn’s comments about Sunderland are really strange and make no sense whatsoever. How could it be that going down to the Championship would help a club in the long run?
Leeds United, Derby County and Nottingham Forest are three of the biggest clubs in England, but they have been in the Championship for years.
True, Sunderland officials need to look at how to make the team competitive and push for top-10 finishes regularly, especially as they have a massive fanbase, but it would make no sense whatsoever to do internal restructuring after going down.
The Black Cats can become a more competitive team while retaining their top-flight status.
Moreover, going down to the Championship does not mean that Sunderland will come back up straightaway, despite being a big club.
Aston Villa are one of the biggest clubs in England, but the Villans are currently just two points above the Championship relegation zone.
