Conor Shaughnessy has deservedly broken into Leeds United’s senior squad this season.
Neil Redfearn has told Radio Yorkshire that Conor Shaughnessy has been “outstanding” for Leeds United, but believes Liam Cooper and Pontus Jansson deserve their first XI spots.
The 21-year-old has made the step up to Leeds’ senior squad this season after working his way through the club’s academy.
And it looks a good move by Thomas Christiansen to include him, with the Irish centre-back impressing in a couple of League Cup wins over Port Vale and Newport County.
However, the Galway-born defender was dropped for the 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest last week as Cooper and Jansson were restored to the first XI.
And although Redfearn claims that the youngster has done an excellent job, he cannot argue with Christiansen’s decision to re-include the two experienced heads in central defence.
“He’s probably been one of the best players this season. I think he’s been outstanding,” Redfearn said on Radio Yorkshire.
“But it was the right thing to bring Cooper back with Jansson as I think they compliment each other.”
Jansson and Cooper have both made four out of five Championship appearances for the Whites this season and, with United third in the table with the second best defence in the division, it is hard to argue that the centre-back duo aren’t the right men for the job.
Leeds haven’t conceded a goal since the 3-2 win at Bolton on the first weekend of the season, when Cooper partnered Matthew Pennington due to Jansson’s suspension.
