Neil Redfearn has told TV Yorkshire that Luke Ayling has been a “fantastic signing” for Leeds United after impressing in an unfamiliar role in midweek.

Leeds reached the fourth round of the League Cup with a penalty shootout victory over Burnley at Turf Moor, after holding the Premier League side to a 2-2 draw in regulation.

Thomas Christiansen had a shortage of recognised centre-halves due to various injuries so the right-back partnered rookie Conor Shaughnessy in the middle of defence, with the former Bristol City man – also captain on the night – posting a fine performance.

Former Whites manager Garry Monk picked him up in the summer of 2016 for just £750,000 in what looks more and more of a bargain every week, and Redfearn is certainly impressed by the former Arsenal academy product.

He told TV Yorkshire: “Ayling has been a fantastic signing for Leeds, whereever you play him – right-back or centre-back. I think if you played him in goal he’d give you a 7/10.”

The 26-year-old could be back to his usual role on Saturday when the Championship leaders take on Ipswich Town at Elland Road, with Liam Cooper, Pontus Jansson and Matthew Pennington all due back in contention.
