Speaking to TV Yorkshire, Neil Redfearn has paid tribute to Leeds United striker Chris Wood following the club’s 2-0 win over Burton Albion on Saturday.

Leeds moved to within a point of the playoff places with a hard-fought victory over Burton, who won promotion from League One last season.

Wood opened the scoring on 83 minutes from the penalty spot, before Souleymane Doukara made sure of the points by adding a second in injury time.

Wood’s opener meant that the New Zealand international has already broken into double figures for the season, netting a very respectable 10 goals in 15 starts across all competitions.

And ex-Leeds boss Redfearn hailed the 24-year-old in an interview with TV Yorkshire at full time, labelling it a “fantastic achievement”.

He said: “To get double figures at this point of the season is a fantastic achievement. He just has to keep plugging away and he has his next target now – 20 goals. This could be his best season for goals in his career I would have thought.”

He scored 20 Championship goals for Millwall and Leicester City combined in the 2012-13 campaign, and scored twice in the FA Cup for the Foxes that season to mean his career-best total is 22.

Leeds fans will be delighted with Wood. He took a fair bit of stick earlier in the season from the supporters, but he has answered the criticism emphatically.

In fact, he might be the Whites’ most important player by virtue of the fact that goals have been hard to come by when he has not been scoring them.
