Neil Redfearn says the Leeds United man get reach double figures.

Neil Redfearn has told TV Yorkshire that Kalvin Phillips is capable of reaching double figures for Leeds United in the goalscoring stakes this season.

The 21-year-old has enjoyed a fine start to the season and scored twice in Leeds’ 3-2 win at Bolton Wanderers in their Championship opener a fortnight ago.

In doing so, Phillips, a Thorp Arch academy product, doubled his total from last term, having only netted once in 33 league outings under Garry Monk.

By scoring twice it would suggest that Phillips, whose second goal was a tap in from 10 yards, is being asked to get forward more by head coach Thomas Christiansen.

And Redfearn is fully on board with giving the youngster more of an attacking responsibility this time around.

“He’s going to have ups and downs,” Redfearn told TV Yorkshire. “He’s had a good start, scoring a couple of goals against Bolton.

“The pleasing thing for me is that he’s starting to get forward a little bit more than what he did last season and I think that’s important.

“The Kalvin Phillips that I know has a goal in him and he’s capable of getting double figures.”

Leeds will need more goals from midfield this season.

Under Monk, United were far too reliant on Chris Wood last term and sharing the goals around would certainly improve the club’s hopes of finishing in the playoff spots come May.
