Neil Redfearn suggests the Leeds United goalkeeper is on the chopping block.

Neil Redfearn has told Radio Yorkshire that Leeds United boss Thomas Christiansen can’t be pleased with goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald.

The 27-year-old continues to find himself under the spotlight for all the wrong reasons and Sunday’s 3-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday is further evidence that the £500,000 signing from Werder Bremen isn’t up to it in the Championship just yet.

That performance followed a series of other shakey displays – including one at Bolton on the first day of the season, where he made a mistake on his debut – and Redfearn says that the Leeds boss will be questioning him to some extent.

The Whites boasted a six-match unbeaten run earlier in the season when Wiedwald didn’t concede a single goal in the Championship, though he had Liam Cooper and Pontus Jansson – who haven’t played together in weeks – ahead of him.

And the former United manager believes that the German simply doesn’t have the same protection from his defence which has exposed him that bit more.

He told Radio Yorkshire: “He can’t be [happy with Wiedwald] because he hasn’t covered himself in glory to be fair.

“He’s been protected of sorts of late but the last two or three games he’s been found wanting if we’re honest. It’s a steep learning curve and he’ll want to try get the better of it.”

Wiedwald will do well to keep his place when Leeds host Reading next Saturday, with Andy Lonergan waiting in the wings to displace him.
