Neil Redfearn has told TV Yorkshire that he expects Leeds United forward Kemar Roofe to kick on after opening his account on Saturday.
The 23-year-old ended a 22-match hoodoo by opening the scoring in the 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Elland Road for what was his first goal for Leeds.
The £3 million signing from Oxford United lamented his “curse” after hitting the crossbar in Tuesday night’s League Cup defeat at Liverpool.
But it would appear as if the curse is lifted and Roofe will be hoping that his goalscoring career with the Whites can now take flight.
The relief and delight was evident in his celebration after nodding home a fantastic Souleymane Doukara cross on 68 minutes.
And former United boss Redfearn believes that Roofe – who bagged 26 goals in all competitions for Oxford last term – will now begin finding the net much more regularly.
“It’s fantastic for the lad because he’s really grafted for this moment,” he told TV Yorkshire. “I think he’ll get more goals now – he’s a proven scorer – and he just needed that chance to go in and what a goal to get off the mark.”
Leeds are now only seven points off the pace in the race for automatic promotion and having another figure to take the goalscoring burden off Chris Wood – who scored United’s second against Villa – would help them bridge that gap.
Fans of the Yorkshire club will certainly be hoping that Roofe can be that guy.
