The two new signings have so far toiled as lone strikers.
This summer Liverpool made some improvements in their attacking department. They spent big money on Christian Benteke of Aston Villa and also brought in Danny Ings from the recently relegated Burnley for a tribunal fee.
However the latter has yet to prove a hit for the club. Ings is yet to score for Liverpool in three appearances for the club and was utilised from the left-hand side against Manchester United last weekend and one former Liverpool striker believes that the club should be using Ings and Benteke up top as a duo.
Neil Mellor, who was Liverpool for seven years, scored six goals in just 22 appearances for the club in a career blighted by injury.
However he knows a thing or two about scoring goals and believes that Ings and benteke would both benefit from playing alongside each other.
He wrote in the Liverpool Echo:
“We all thought Danny Ings was being paired up top with Christian Benteke at United but that wasn’t how it was.
“Fair play to him, he did a job for the team and his boss but at Anfield I really hope we do now see Danny with Benteke in a front two.”
Indeed Ings would love to play alongside Benteke but it might be he doesn’t get much of chance going forward after this weekend.
With Daniel Sturridge said to be returning to action in the coming weeks, potentially against Norwich City tomorrow, his chances of first-team football are to become even more limited – regardless of formations from Brendan Rodgers.
