Virgil van Dijk was perhaps Liverpool’s best player on Monday.

Virgil van Dijk of Liverpool during the Premier League match between Crystal Palace and Liverpool FC at Selhurst Park on August 20, 2018 in London, United Kingdom.

Neil Mellor has told Liverpool’s official channel that he was struck by Virgil van Dijk’s leadership during Monday’s win over Crystal Palace.

The Netherlands international had a superb game in central defence for Liverpool and barely allowed Christian Benteke a sniff at goal during the 90 minutes.

Van Dijk, who earns £150,000 per week at Anfield [Total Sportek], has helped to transform the Reds’ defence since joining from Southampton in January.

And former Liverpool man Mellor couldn’t take his eyes off him at Selhurst Park after displaying ‘great leadership qualities’.

He told Liverpool’s channel: “The camera was on the game but I was watching him [Van Dijk] and time and time again he was shouting at players, saying ‘get in this position’.

“He showed great leadership qualities.”

Jurgen Klopp’s side rode out a 2-0 victory, with a James Milner penalty and late second from Sadio Mane sealing a tough three points for the Merseysiders.

Liverpool have won both of their Premier League games this season after thumping West Ham United on the opening weekend of the season and so far they certainly look every inch of the title challengers that they’re supposed to be, though it’s still early.
