Neil McCann has told Sky Sports that Newcastle United and Scotland defender Grant Hanley was at fault for Slovakia’s third goal in World Cup qualifying on Tuesday.
Gordon Strachan’s side were humbled 3-0 in Slovakia last night in a defeat which leaves them fourth in Group F, four points behind England at the summit.
Two goals from Robert Mak in both halves helped the hosts into a comfortable 2-0 lead before the hour mark, and Adam Nemec sealed the victory by nodding home a third on 68 minutes.
Nemec beat the Newcastle centre-back to a cross, and barely had to jump to guide his header home. It did not make Hanley look great, it must be said.
And Neil McCann, speaking to Sky Sports, has suggested that the 24-year-old should have done more to prevent the goal.
He said: “The third goal of course is Grant Hanley. He could do better as well. You can’t let a striker come across of you.
“You have to be goal side and if it goes over your head then fair enough, you’re beaten by a taller man, but there’s lots of things he could do better.”
Hanley joined Newcastle for £6 million in the summer but the former Blackburn Rovers defender has managed just one Championship start.
So much of his Magpies career has been spent on the bench, and the manner of his defending on Tuesday does not inspire confidence that he can break into the side anytime soon.
