Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers signed Joey Barton from Burnley during the summer transfer window.
Neil McCann has told Sky Sports News, which was broadcast on 11th November, that Glasgow Rangers have handled Joey Barton terribly.
Barton and Rangers parted company yesterday, with the 34-year-old lasting just five months at Ibrox.
Barton was brought to Rangers to be a key player for Mark Warburton’s side for the upcoming campaign.
However, things never went right for Barton at Rangers, with off the field problems ultimately costing him his place in Warburton’s team.
Barton was suspended after a heated argument in training with Andy Halliday way back in September, and was never offered the opportunity to play in the first-team again.
McCann feels that Warburton’s handling of the situation has been bizarre, and he has questioned why the Rangers boss bothered bringing the central midfielder to Glasgow in the first place.
“I think it’s been handled terribly by Rangers, as a whole,” the Sky Sports pundit said. “I always felt that Joey could have been a big player for Rangers, but someone of that strength of opinion was always going to be difficult.
“You don’t sign a guy like that if you aren’t prepared to meet that head on. If you can’t deal with it, don’t sign him.
“It could have been handled better on the playing side, and sadly it has come to an end in the wrong way.”
Barton ended up making just eight appearances for Rangers, and he rarely showed his best form for the Glasgow club.
Barton has already been linked with a move to Burnley and Derby County, since he was released by Rangers last night.
