Neil McCann claims ‘a lot of’ Rangers fans ‘won’t be happy’ with Steven Gerrard if he doesn’t win a trophy this season

Rangers host rivals Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup quarter-final replay on Tuesday night.

Neil McCann has claimed that Rangers fans ‘won’t be happy’ with manager Steven Gerrard if he fails to win any silverware with the club this season.

The Gers are in action on Tuesday night when they host rivals Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup quarter-final replay, with the winner set to play Celtic in the last four.

From a realistic standpoint, this is Gerrard’s best chance of winning a trophy in his first season in charge of the club because their Old Firm rivals have already won the League Cup and are eight points clear in the Premiership.

Speaking to the Football Centre on Sky Sports News, McCann insisted that the game against Aberdeen on Tuesday is ‘huge’ as he claimed that the Ibrox fans demand ‘success’.

“It is a huge game [against Aberdeen],” McCann told the Football Centre. “I was asked the question, ‘what would be a successful season for Rangers’ and I felt if they could push Celtic all the way, continue to improve under Steven and get a piece of silverware in the trophy cabinet, it would be a successful one.

“The Rangers fans demand success and if he doesn’t get something this year then there will be a lot of fans that won’t be happy, but I do believe that he has done a very, very good job.”

In their previous two encounters, Rangers have recorded 1-1 draws with Hibernian in the Premiership and that Scottish Cup encounter against the Dons.

Gerrard will take comfort from the fact that his team won 4-0 the last time they played at home, but some may point towards the fact that was against relegation-threatened Dundee.

On their route to the quarter-finals, the Glasgow club comfortably dispatched Cowdenbeath and Kilmarnock, with striker Alfredo Morelos scoring four goals against Killie in the replay.

The highly-rated youngster will be looking for more of the same and trying to ensure he stays out of the referee’s book because he has seen red on numerous occasions against Derek McIness’ men this term.
