Adam Matthews will leave Sunderland when his contract expires but could he return to the Scottish Premiership with Celtic?
Neil Lennon is clearly a huge fan of Adam Matthews.
The Welsh international made his breakthrough at Celtic during Lennon’s first spell at Parkhead after all, winning four Scottish Premiership titles and starring on the European stage.
In particular, Matthews’ performance in that famous win against Barcelona, a remarkable night which reduced Rod Stewart to tears and made a star out of Victor Wanyama and co, will live long in the memory.
And Lennon could hardly speak higher of a player Celtic signed from Cardiff City in 2011.
“He’s a fantastic player. Coming to a big club like this, as a relative unknown, it has not fazed him. He’s getting better and better. Some of his games in Europe this season have been like a seasoned veteran,” he told the BBC back in February 2013.
And with Matthews currently without a club after seeing his contract at Sunderland come to an end, it is perhaps no real surprise that Lennon is keen to work with the 27-year-old once again.
According to The Scottish Daily Mail (16 June, back page), Lennon is mulling over a deal to bring Matthews back to Glasgow with Arsenal’s Carl Jenkinson and Sheffield United’s George Baldock also on his radar.
Now, Matthews might not have lived up to the expectations placed upon him by Lennon and he’d hardly be the biggest statement signing for a Celtic side who will be under pressure from Rangers next season while hoping to improve their results on the European stage.
But he is a man Lennon knows and, most importantly, trusts.
