Celtic defender Dedryck Boyata may miss the rest of the season.
Celtic’s interim boss Neil Lennon has told the Daily Record that it’s possible that Dedryck Boyata won’t play for the club again.
The Bhoys beat Rangers 2-1 at Parkhead on Sunday afternoon, putting one hand on the Scottish Premiership title after James Forrest’s late winner.
Whilst most are celebrating yet another win over their Old Firm rivals, there may be bad news on the horizon for Celtic, with Boyata a major concern.
The Belgian international started Sunday’s derby, and whilst he was arguably at fault for Ryan Kent’s Rangers equaliser, he had been bossing Alfredo Morelos before his red card.
Yet after Kent turned away from Boyata, the centre back pulled up and removed himself from the game, despite Celtic subsequently being forced to play with 10 men having used all of their substitutes.
Boyata trudged off, and whilst some criticised him for leaving his side a man short, it now seems that he really damaged a hamstring and simply couldn’t play on.
Boyata is out of contract this summer and unlikely to stay at Parkhead, meaning the man brought to Glasgow by Ronny Deila in the summer of 2015 may have ultimately played for Celtic for the last time.
Helping the club towards another title would be some way to go out, but Lennon admits it’s possible that we’ve seen the last of Boyata in a Celtic shirt, admitting it’s a blow to lose such an ‘absolutely brilliant’ player.
“Possibly,” said Lennon when asked if Boyata has played his final Celtic game. “He felt it [his hamstring] rip. He played on having felt a twinge and then he felt a rip five minutes later. Again, we’ll have to wait and see, but it’s a blow because he’s been absolutely brilliant,” he added.
