Former Celtic boss Neil Lennon has said on talkSPORT (2:43pm, February 4, 2022) that he would be open to taking the Sunderland managerial job.

The former Celtic manager has said that he finds the chance to manage Sunderland very appealing and has also praised the fans of the League One club.

Lennon won the Scottish Premiership title five times, the Scottish Cup on four occasions, and the Scottish League Cup once with Celtic.

The 50-year-old also won the Scottish second division title with Hibernian in 2016-17.

Lennon said: “It’s very appealing – big club, fantastic fanbase and in a good position in the league.”

Would Neil Lennon be good for Sunderland?

In our opinion, Lennon would be a good managerial appointment for Sunderland.

But, we can understand the risks involved.

Now, Lennon has a very strong reputation as a manager, but that is in Scotland.

The former Northern Ireland international midfielder did not have the best of times at Bolton Wanderers.

Now, of course, we know that Lennon was successful as a player when he was at Crewe Alexandra, Leicester City and Nottingham Forest.

However, in our view, the Sunderland chiefs will be a bit wary of appointing a manager who does not have a track record of getting promotion with a club in England.

Sunderland are third in the League One table at the moment with 54 points from 29 matches, five points behind leaders Rotherham United, who have played 28 times.
