Celtic boss Neil Lennon has told the Daily Record that he thinks Bhoys fans have an increased expectancy level since his first spell.
The Bhoys are in action against Hearts today, and whilst they will be expected to win, boss Lennon isn’t exactly enjoying a stellar start to the season.
Lennon saw Celtic crash out of the Champions League at the hands of CFR Cluj earlier this month, and then only just squeaked past Dunfermline in the Scottish League Cup too.
It’s been a frustrating transfer window too, with Celtic struggling to really find key signings for Lennon whilst star defender Kieran Tierney has been sold to Arsenal.
Fans are looking for something to kickstart the season, as Thursday’s 2-0 win over AIK was very much expected, and it may take an Old Firm win over Rangers next weekend to really get fans going.
Some fans have been critical of summer signings Christopher Jullien and Boli Bolingoli, and Lennon has been pleading with supporters to give them both time.
Now, Lennon has suggested that he’s noticed a change from Celtic fans since returning to Parkhead, and that’s that their expectation level has risen massively since his first spell as manager, which ended back in 2014.
Lennon feels that the expectation level is now somewhat unrealistic, and is now just looking to put the Champions League failure behind him and focus on the Europa League.
“It does take your breath away – more so than ever,” said Lennon. “I have noticed a discernible change since I came back in, the expectation level – sometimes it can be unrealistic. We know ourselves that we were capable enough of getting through against Cluj. Now we have to make the most of the Europa League. That was a good start and hopefully we can finish it off next week,” he added.
