Former Celtic manager Neil Lennon, now at Hibernian, comments on former Gers midfielder’s Derek McInnes’s decision to snub Ibrox club Glasgow Rangers.
The former Celtic manager had suggested that if he were in Derek McInnes’s position at Aberdeen, then he would have made the switch to the Gers.
Ibrox club Rangers wanted to bring back former Gers midfielder McInnes as their manager and permanent successor to Caixinha, but the 46-year-old decided to remain at Scottish Premiership rivals Aberdeen.
Lennon, who played as a midfielder for Celtic from 2000 until 2007 and managed the Glasgow giants from 2010 until 2014, has admitted that if he were in the position of McInnes, then he would have taken the Rangers managerial job.
The Scottish Sun quotes Lennon as saying when asked if he would have turned down the job in McInnes’s position: “No, that’s my honest opinion.
“You look at what the board did for Caixinha in the summer – they gave him ten or eleven million to spend. There is no one else who has that power apart from Celtic.
“I think they backed Caixinha. OK it’s not worked out for him. But someone coming in there now, Rangers sitting in second place, I think it’s good time to go in there and be the manager.”
Of course, given Lennon’s links with Celtic, one suspects that he would not have taken the Rangers managerial role if he were offered, but one can understand his point of view.
Rangers are one of the biggest clubs in the world, and McInnes could have done great things at Ibrox.
