Neil Lennon has hit back at Charlie Nicholas after he said that the Celtic boss will be ‘annoyed’ and ‘putting on a brave face’ after the transfer window ended.

The Express (via The Daily Record) quote Nicholas as saying: ‘He had to work double time to get anything out of so-called wealthy Celtic. I’d imagine he’ll be pretty annoyed this morning. I am sure he will put on a brave face but I don’t think he will have got anything close to what he was looking for.’

Afterwards, Lennon retaliated. The Daily Record quote him as saying: ‘If we had signed Messi and Ronaldo, Charlie still would have found fault with it. He’s been negative about the club for years.

‘Charlie doesn’t speak for me, he doesn’t think for me, and to be honest with you, it doesn’t resonate one bit here.’

In all honesty, it’s difficult to view Celtic’s transfer window as anything other than a success.

Star man Odsonne Edouard remained at Celtic Park, as did the likes of Kristoffer Ajer, Ryan Christie and Callum McGregor.

The Hoops also managed to sign promising midfielder David Turnbull, as well as Uruguay international Diego Laxalt from AC Milan.

That sentiment has been echoed by Celtic legend Chris Sutton, who had his own swipe at Nicholas on Twitter.

The former Hoops hero wrote: ‘I’m not sure what Charlie Nicholas is sitting there thinking… but to keep hold of all his best players and bring in another left sider represents a really good transfer window…’

It does feel like Nicholas is being overly negative.

Celtic are on course to secure their tenth Scottish Premiership title in a row, having just recorded a treble-treble in which they’ve picked up three trophies across each of the last three seasons.

In other years, they may have lost Edouard and Ajer just like they lost Moussa Dembele and Kieran Tierney, so to actually keep their top players deserves applauding, not negative comments.
