Leigh Griffiths has been out of commission for Celtic since December.
Neil Lennon has revealed to The Scottish Sun he is optimistic that Celtic fans will see forgotten striker Leigh Griffiths before the season is over.
Griffiths hasn’t kicked a ball for Celtic since December after being ruled out for a number of months with unspecified personal problems.
The 28-year-old, signed by Lennon in 2014 during the Northern Irishman’s first spell in charge of the Hoops, netted 40 goals for the Scottish giants across all competitions during the 2015-16 campaign.
The Bhoys have missed someone of his talents, with Odsonne Edouard struggling with injury while the Scot has been absent.
But although Lennon, who met up with Griffiths earlier in the week, admits that his striker needs some work, he is hopeful that he’ll still play a role in the season.
He told The Scottish Sun: “We met on Monday. I don’t want to talk about private things, but he’s obviously itching to get back and I’m optimistic about seeing him back before the end of the season.
“He looked okay and in reasonable condition. He’s got a bit of work to do to catch up with the rest, but that’s what we’re hoping will happen over the coming weeks.
“It’s down to him now. It will take a bit of time, but hopefully we’ll see him back before the end of the season.”
Celtic fans will be delighted with the update.
Lennon is bidding to lead the Bhoys to the treble ‘Treble’ between now and the end of the season, and what a huge boost it’d be if Griffiths could play a role in that.
As far as goalscoring goes, he might be unrivalled in Scottish football and the likes of Aberdeen – who face Celtic in a Scottish Cup semi-final – won’t be over the moon about him being on the comeback trail.
