The Celtic manager thinks the young winger needs more games.

Michael Johnston of Celtic looks on during the UEFA Europa League Play Off First Leg match between Celtic and AIK at Celtic Park on August 22, 2019 in Glasgow, United Kingdom.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has refuted the suggestion that Mikey Johnston is ready to take part in international action with the Scotland national team, The Scottish Sun report.

The young winger has made quite the impression at the Hoops over the last six months. He’s kicked into a new gear since Lennon replaced Brendan Rodgers as manager in February.

Injuries have halted his progress this season, but his overall form has been good enough for some to ponder his Scotland future, despite only featuring at U21 level currently.

Lennon though is taking a long-term view and clearly doesn’t want his player exposed to too much, too soon in his career.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he said: “He needs consistency of performances and he needs to play a little bit more I think.

“He’s been called up to the 21s which is pleasing from his point of view. He does bring an extra dimension to the way we play when he’s fit and sharp. We miss him sometimes.

“But he’s a work in progress and we’re delighted with the progress he’s been making and hopefully we’ll see him sooner rather than later back on the pitch. But in terms of Scotland it’s maybe just too soon for him just yet.”

Club spot should secure caps in future

For Johnston this season it’s all about cementing his place on the left wing for Celtic. With the addition of Mohamed Elyounoussi in the summer transfer window, he has even more competition on that flank.

With three goals and four assists in ten appearances this term, he has contributed and will likely be used by the Hoops boss when he returns from injury.

As Lennon says though, consistency will be needed to keep his teammates out of the side.

If he can do that, then he’s likely producing good enough football to be considered for Scotland squads in the future by default.

His sole focus should, and likely will be, on what he can do for Celtic this season.
