Rangers-supporting midfielder Paddy McNair may well make a shock move to Celtic.
Celtic boss Neil Lennon has told The Scottish Sun that he is interested in signing Middlesbrough man Paddy McNair this summer.
The Bhoys have seen a deal for Motherwell midfielder David Turnbull fall through once and for all, after two weeks of on-and-off confusion.
Celtic are though close to signing Toulouse defender Christopher Jullien in a big-money move, and Lennon is looking for other targets too.
Middlesbrough ace McNair has been touted as a target this week, and Lennon has now commented on the situation surrounding his fellow Northern Irishman.
Lennon has admitted that there’s interest in the Middlesbrough man, but literally only offered five words about him, refusing to go any further.
“There’s an interest there, yeah,” said Lennon, who will have to take on Sheffield United for the 24-year-old’s signature according to The Northern Echo.
McNair’s versatility would be welcomed at Parkhead. He can offer depth at centre back, offer competition for Scott Brown in a holding midfield role or even serve as a box-to-box player.
That may well be why Lennon wants McNair, but a move may be somewhat controversial. McNair is a massive Rangers fan, and posted a photo of himself outside Ibrox, with a Rangers scarf around his neck, just over a year ago.
Signing a player who loves Celtic’s bitter rivals so much may be hard for some Bhoys fans to swallow, and it will be fascinating to see whether McNair actually fancies a move to Parkhead given his affinity with Rangers.
