Celtic boss Neil Lennon has revealed to BBC Sport that the club have signed Jonathan Afolabi.

The Republic of Ireland under-19 international had been briefly linked with a move to Parkhead this summer after rejecting the chance to say at Southampton.

Only 19, Lennon claims that Celtic are signing him originally as a development player, but said that he could be ‘on the cusp’ of senior football.

He told BBC Sport: “We have signed him on a free transfer and he is one that’s a development. He is sort of on the cusp [of the first-team reckoning].

“He will come in and train with us and we will get a good look at him over the next few weeks and see what we want to do with him in terms of his progression. He is raw but he has good potential.”

The Hoops manager already has a number of strikers, including Odsonne Edouard, Leigh Griffiths and Vakoun Issouf Bayo.

It’s a formidable list of options, even if Bayo hasn’t quite got the chance to show what he can do just yet.

But getting game time ahead of Edouard or Griffiths simply isn’t going to happen, so it wouldn’t be a massive surprise if he appears mainly for Celtic’s youth side this season.

The teenager starred for the Boys in Green during the Euro U19 tournament this summer, helping them reach the semi final.
