Celtic defender Jozo Simunovic put together some strong performances towards the end of the campaign.

Celtic boss Neil Lennon has praised Jozo Simunovic’s performances since he came back to Parkhead in the Scottish Sun.

Simunovic was struggling for appearances at Celtic when Brendan Rodgers was in charge early on in the season, as he seemed to have slipped down to fourth choice.

However, Simunovic played regularly after Lennon took charge, when he was fit, and he proved his worth.

The Croatian defender managed to put together a string of solid performances towards the end of the campaign, although his pre-season has started in inauspicious fashion.

Simunovic was sent off in Celtic’s last friendly match, and Lennon is hoping that his defender is not banned by the SFA.

“Since I’ve come back to the club, Jozo has been very, very good. He’s been great,” Lennon said.

“I’m not sure how much contact there really was, so it seemed a bit harsh in a pre-season friendly.”

Even without Simunovic on the pitch Celtic still managed to pick up a 0-0 draw with St Gallen to round off their pre-season tour.

Simunovic will need to continue his good form if he wants to play at Celtic, as competition for places is set to increase next season following the arrival of Christopher Jullien.
