Brendan Rodgers’s Leicester City reportedly wanted to sign Callum McGregor from Celtic in the summer transfer window.

Callum McGregor of Celtic has a shot at goal during the Scottish Premier League match between Hibernian and Celtic at Easter Road on 28 September, 2019 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has told The Scottish Sun that the club plan to hand Callum McGregor a new contract.

McGregor has been on the books of Celtic his entire professional club football career so far, and is one of the best players in the team.

The Scotland international has been superb for the Hoops over the years, and manager Lennon has said that the Scottish Premiership club plan to hand him a new deal.

This despite the 26-year-old signing a new deal at Celtic in December which will see him stay at Celtic Park until the middle of 2023, as reported in The Scottish Sun.

According to The Scottish Sun, Brendan Rodgers’s Leicester City wanted to sign McGregor in the summer transfer window.

Lennon told The Scottish Sun about McGregor: “We are talking at the moment and it’s one we are hoping to get finalised. There was interest in Callum during the summer, no question about that.

“There was no confirmation of any bid, but there was definite interest and, to be honest, that didn’t surprise me.

“We held on to him and it’s important we do the right thing with him. The principled thing is to give him a new deal, an improved contract, because he deserves it.”

Sensible decision from Celtic

McGregor is Celtic through and through, and it make sense for the Hoops to hand him a new contract.

The 26-year-old is going to hit the peak of his career in two or three years’ time, and the Celtic Park faithful will hope that that he is at the Hoops at the time.
