Celtic are out of the Champions League after a defeat to CFR Cluj.
Celtic boss Neil Lennon has told The Herald that he thinks crashing out of the Champions League will impact his transfer plans.
The Bhoys were in Champions League action last night, playing the second leg of their qualifying clash with Romanian side CFR Cluj, and were expected to go through having notched an away goal in the 1-1 first leg draw.
However, Celtic endured a miserable night, with Ciprean Deac putting Cluj in front, before James Forrest and Odsonne Edouard gave Celtic the lead.
Celtic may have thought that was that, but a wild flurry of goals saw Billel Omrani draw Cluj level, Ryan Christie put Celtic back in front and then Omrani giving Cluj the advantage again.
As Celtic desperately pressed for a winner, Cluj managed to wrap up a 4-3 win on the night with George Tucudean sealing Celtic’s fate in the dying embers of the game.
Celtic must now head into the Europa League qualifiers, with their Champions League dream over for another year, even before the final qualifying round.
Celtic’s recruitment will be slammed once again, as they haven’t added enough quality this summer, and even the players they did bring in, weren’t starting last night as Christopher Jullien and Boli Bolingoli were left on the bench.
After selling Kieran Tierney, Celtic need signings – but Lennon has now suggested that crashing out of the Champions League will impact his spending plans in the final weeks of the transfer window, even after selling Tierney to Arsenal, and some Celtic fans will be massively concerned at hearing that.
“I’m sure it will, but that’s not at the forefront of my mind at the minute,” said Lennon. “We all wanted Champions League football and we have only ourselves to blame for not getting that,” he added.
