Celtic may well return for Tottenham Hotspur’s Victor Wanyama in January.
Celtic boss Neil Lennon has told The Scottish Sun that he did want Tottenham Hotspur’s Victor Wanyama this summer – and didn’t rule out a January move.
The Bhoys were busy late in the transfer window, signing Moritz Bauer, Mohamed Elyounoussi, Lee O’Connor, Jeremie Frimpong and Greg Taylor in a last-gasp flurry.
Celtic were even linked with a late move to sign Spurs misfit Wanyama, who is clearly surplus to requirements under Mauricio Pochettino in North London.
The Daily Record reported that Celtic wanted Wanyama on loan, but were relying on a hefty wage contribution from his parent club in order to strike a deal.
That didn’t happen, and with Wanyama missing out on a move away, he’s now stuck on the Spurs sidelines until January, when he may well get a move away.
Wanyama, 28, has struggled to play regularly for Spurs over the last two years, and a move back to Celtic – where he played from 2011 to 2013 before joining Southampton – could make some sense.
His wages would of course be an issue, but reuniting with Lennon may be appealing given that he signed Wanyama for Celtic in the first place, and the Celtic boss has commented on the rumours.
Lennon has admitted that there was real interest in signing Wanyama this summer, but the deal ‘never got off the ground’, before suggesting that Celtic will consider a move in January, but cost may be a concern.
“There was interest but it never got off the ground,” said Lennon. “Could we look at it again in January? We’ll have to wait and see. We might not want to with the balance of the squad now, as well as the affordability,” he added.
