Celtic brought in Nicky Hammond to aid their recruitment over the summer.

Celtic boss Neil Lennon has told The Scottish Sun that he thinks Nicky Hammond is a ‘very good candidate’ to be the club’s long-term head of recruitment.

The Bhoys not only lost Brendan Rodgers, Chris Davies and Kolo Toure to Leicester City earlier this year, but eventually lost head of recruitment Lee Congerton too.

Whereas the other three left in February, Congerton only left this past summer, leaving the Bhoys with a hole to fill in their recruitment department.

Celtic curiously chose to make a temporary appointment by bringing in Hammond, who was sacked as West Bromwich Albion’s technical director in 2018.

Formerly of Reading, Hammond has been attempting to rebuild his reputation with Celtic, and he’s overseen a decent summer transfer window, even if it’s unclear just how much impact he had.

Celtic must now decide whether the want to keep Hammond permanently or pursue another option, and boss Lennon has given an update on the situation.

Lennon admitted that Hammond is working on a scouting report alongside Celtic’s other talent spotters ahead of the January transfer window, and when the Bhoys read that, they will likely make a decision, with Lennon feeling he is a ‘very good candidate’.

“Nicky is working away in the background on writing up a report and away talking to all the other scouts we have on the ground so we will have a good look at that when it’s finalised,” said Lennon. “I certainly think that he would be a very good candidate, put it that way,” he added.
