Alex Palmer has the potential to become West Bromwich Albion’s first choice stopper, according to the Baggies’ goalkeeping coach.

In comments reported by the Express and Star, Neil Cutler has insisted that he can see no reason why Alex Palmer is not destined to become West Brom’s number one goalkeeper in the coming years.

The 21-year-old is still awaiting his first-team debut for the Baggies, but his prospects of earning some game-time in the senior side appear set for a boost with Express and Star reporting that Boaz Myhill is out of contract with the club at the end of the season while Ben Foster is being eyed by some Premier League sides, according to a recent report from The Sun.

And goalkeeping coach Cutler has heaped praise on the youngster and insisted that he will be ready to step in and become the side’s number one in the future.

“I think Alex has got a great chance, he’s a talented boy, a great technician, just needs to speed himself up and utilise his power,” he said, as reported by the Express and Star.

“Once he does that he’s going to be good. He works on it, his work ethic is really good.”

“Without a doubt – there’s no reason why not,” he went on to respond when asked if he is a future number one.

Relegation to the Championship appears to be a formality for West Brom right now. And while that will be a massive blow for the club, it may have positive consequences for players such as Palmer who are on the periphery of the first-team picture.

If several important first-team players leave, some of the under-23 side may get their chance. And that should be motivating Palmer to do all he can to impress before the end of the campaign ahead of what looks set to be an absolutely vital summer for Alan Pardew’s men with Championship football on the cards.
