Hansi Flick has confirmed that he is in talks to become the new Germany manager, despite claims that the departing Bayern Munich boss wanted the Tottenham Hotspur job, while speaking to TMW

It is one of the worst-kept secrets in European football.

And no, we are not talking about Harry Kane’s burning desire to push for a move away from his rapidly-declining boyhood club (Athletic).

While Spurs supporters are having to get used to the idea of ‘one of their own’ becoming someone else’s, 56-year-old Flick is rapidly closing in on one of the biggest jobs in international football.

The Telegraph reported recently that the 2020 Champions League winner would have been interested by the prospect of taking over from Jose Mourinho at Tottenham.

But a man who spent eight years assisting Joachim Low in the Germany dugout is widely expected to replace his old mentor after this summer’s European Championships.

Flick, speaking ahead of his final fortnight in charge of Bayern Munich, has confirmed that talks are heading in the right direction.

“Oliver (Bierhoff, Director of the German national team) has already said that in the last few days the negotiations are going well,” explained Flick, who lifted a staggering seven trophies in less than two years at the Allianz Arena.

“I still have a task and a job to do here because the team is important to me. I am very grateful to have led such a team. That’s why I focus on the rest of the matches.

“The goal is exceed 80 points and help Lewy (Robert Lewandowski) score 40 goals.”

Should Lewandowski find the net twice in the final two matchdays, against Augsburg and Freiburg, he will break Gerd Muller’s record for the most goals scored in a single Bundesliga campaign.

The Polish superstar – who spoke in glowing terms about the outgoing Flick this week – has record a staggering 39 efforts in just 27 games.
