Tottenham Hotspur chose to appoint Nuno Espirito Santo over the summer, scrapping a move for Paulo Fonseca in the process.
Jose Mourinho’s exit in April resulted in a lengthy and often ridiculous managerial hunt.
In the end, Nuno was brought in to replace Mourinho, his own former Porto boss.
With three Premier League defeats in a row, Nuno already finds himself under pressure as Tottenham boss.
Fonseca claims Tottenham deal was agreed
Nuno was far from the only manager Tottenham considered. He wasn’t even the only Portuguese manager they targeted.
It looked like Tottenham would be appointing Paulo Fonseca, who had left Roma and been replaced by – you guessed it – Mourinho.
However, the deal was scrapped and Tottenham went in a completely different direction.
Fonseca has now told The Telegraph that his agreement was in place to become Tottenham boss.
Fabio Paratici wanted a more defensively-minded coach though, even if Daniel Levy and Steve Hitchen fancied Fonseca’s attacking style.

Tottenham fans seem split
Fonseca’s comments have sparked debate amongst Tottenham supporters.
Some believe that Fonseca would have been a flop at Tottenham anyway, and he should simply stop talking about Tottenham.
Others can’t believe that Daniel Levy wanted an attacking coach but then brought in a director of football who preferred a more defensive option.
Maybe Paratici saw the Tottenham squad and felt that an attacking coach would simply leave this group of players too exposed.
Still, some aren’t happy with Paratici and believe that Tottenham need an attacking coach in order to move forward and challenge the top four.
