Tony Cascarino says Harry Winks was ‘left in the wilderness’ before being sold by Tottenham Hotspur to Championship side Leicester City this summer.
The 27-year-old, who was on loan at Serie A side Sampdoria last season, knew for a long time that his Tottenham career was coming to an end.
At one point, for Cascarino, Harry Winks was showing that he looked like he ‘might have a career there’, but in the end, ‘he needed to move’, as he told talkSPORT.
It’s extra tough for players that have come through the academy and are boyhood fans like Winks – club legend Graham Roberts gave the midfield star a good send-off recently.
But, from Tottenham and the player’s side, this just needed to be done, even though there was a new manager in Ange Postecoglou through the doors.
Cascarino touched upon Winks’ career and how it was showing real promise at one stage.

“Yes, it’s a good move for Harry (Winks) because he got left in the wilderness a bit at Spurs,” said Cascarino.
“At one time, it looked like he might have a career there. For whatever reason, or whatever manager, he just didn’t play enough football. In and out of the team.
“Then he found himself sidelined and not involved in the team, then he found himself not involved at all last season.
“He needed that move. Needed to get away from the football club. I am sure he would love to have established him at Spurs – Harry Winks needs to re-boot his career at Leicester.”

Leicester favourites for promotion
You can argue all you want about Winks stagnating on the Premier League stage, but one thing is for sure, he is too good for the Championship.
That’s why Leicester should be lucky that they have managed to nab a player of his experience this summer.
Perhaps just getting the joy back of winning again will spark Winks’ career back into life because he is now starting to hit his peak years.
