Paul Merson has told Deadline Day on Sky Sports (05/10/20 at 2:15 pm) that Thomas Partey would be a ‘great signing’ for Arsenal.
Things are getting exciting over in North London as the clock ticks closer to the 11 pm deadline, with Sky Sports claiming that the Gunners have hope in their pursuit of the Atletico Madrid man.
It has been rumoured that Partey has a £45 million release clause, which Arsenal have indicated that they will meet.
Former Premier League winner, Merson, shared that he ‘nearly fell off’ his chair when he heard how much Partey can be purchased for, as he made it clear that he would be a top capture.
“I think he’s a top draw player,” Merson told Sky Sports. “I nearly fell off my chair, £45 million, I don’t think that’s a lot of money, at all for the quality of player you are getting here.
“The one thing he brings as well. Discipline. He has played at Atletico Madrid, who are one of the most disciplined teams in Europe and he would do that.
“He’s not a midfield player who goes running all over the place and you are thinking ‘where has he gone?’. He is very disciplined. I think he would be a great signing.”
Arsenal’s record transfer deals
- Nicolas Pepe
£72 million
- Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
£56 million
- Alexandre Lacazette
£52 million
- Thomas Partey
45 million
- Mesut Ozil

There will be celebrations galore amongst Arsenal supporters if they can secure Partey’s services before the 11 pm deadline on Monday.
Partey is a player that is much-needed in Arsenal’s midfield and a player who would elevate a team that has started the season in a healthy fashion.
But time is running out for Arsenal to conclude a deal and if Partey ends up staying in Spain then those in the North London boardroom will feel the wrath of the supporters.
