HITC Sport selects your club’s player most at risk of being sold this summer – Rangers’ is talented Ibrox youngster McKay.
Rangers’ Barrie McKay in action (left)
It’s nearly a month since Rangers’ Barrie McKay revealed to the Sunday Post that he was waiting to hear back from his employers regarding a new contract.
The Gers winger reassured himself the club were “probably waiting until they’ve got a new manager in”, although almost a fortnight has passed since Pedro Caixinha walked through the door at Ibrox.
With reports of interest from England and RB Leipzig during the January transfer window, Rangers would be wise to get a move on if they still wish to tie down the 22-year-old, whose existing deal expires in 15 months’ time.
The longer the situation remains unresolved the more likely McKay is to change his mind about wanting to sign up, and should it continue through to the summer transfer window, the Scottish giants would be left vulnerable to offers which could seriously turn the player’s head.
Dejected-looking Rangers fans
Were that to happen then selling him on could be the Gers’ only remaining option, knowing they’d recoup next-to-nothing for arguably their biggest home-produced talent this decade, in 2018.
McKay aside, Rangers can perhaps afford to lose any of the next two summers’ out-of-contract stars, but the Scotland international – both in terms of ability and saleability – is practically irreplaceable.
This needs sorting, and fast.
