Tottenham’s Tanguy Ndombele has labelled Serge Aurier ‘the little boss’ on his Instagram story after he signed for Villarreal.
On transfer deadline day, Aurier ripped up his contract with Tottenham and became a free-agent.
The 28-year-old had one-year left on his deal and was clearly told that he had no future in North London.
Well, he has now landed on the doorsteps of former Arsenal boss Unai Emery in Spain, who he worked with at PSG.
It was the right call for Aurier to leave Spurs because it just didn’t work out for him under Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho and the signs weren’t good under Nuno Espirito Santo.
Aurier’s error-prone ways were a constant problem in his game and he never showed signs that he was going to eradicate that from his locker.
But it’s going to be interesting to see how he performs in La Liga and whether he can follow in the footsteps of his former teammate.
A familiar face in Juan Foyth is already at Villarreal and he helped the club win the Europa League last season.
The Argentine has been used at right-back by Emery, so it will be interesting to see how that pans out this season.
But whilst Aurier has now gone, it’s Emerson Royal, Japhet Tanganga and Matt Doherty fighting for that right-back spot.
And given that Doherty is third in line, it won’t be a surprise if he follows Aurier out of the exit door soon.
