Joe Rodon has made a solid start to life in France with Ligue 1 side Rennes, but Maxi Foot have handed the on-loan Tottenham defender a 4.5 rating for his display in a 2-1 Europa League win over Dynamo Kiev on Thursday night.
Rodon, 24, has clocked up 11 appearances since joining the club on loan from Spurs. The Wales international has even opened his goalscoring account at professional level, scoring in a 3-1 win over Brest back in August.
Rennes have made an excellent start – winning six of his 12 games in all competitions. Rennes have only lost once. They took their tally to seven points in the Europa League group stage from three points, on Thursday night.
Goals from Martin Terrier and Desire Doue secured the win – the latter scoring in injury time. A game they should have won with some ease. French outlet Maxi Foot report that Rodon struggled, handing him a rating of 4.5/10.

“A rather mixed outing for Rodon. In the duels, the player on loan from Tottenham was relatively discreet. Without demeriting his overall display, he was above all distinguished by his passivity on the action of Tsygankov’s goal.”

Viktor Tsygankov’s goal did not look good for Rodon. As the ball comes across from the left flank he is caught flat-footed. Then, when the ball reaches Tsygankov, he stops. His first shot is saved by Steven Mandanda.
If he continues his closing down of Tsygankov, then he might be able to stop the rebound. But instead, Tsygankov is left unchallenged to slam home the rebound. As Maxi Foot says, his “passivity” is to blame for Kiev’s goal.
Ultimately, it did not matter too much as Rennes finally won the match in injury time. But had they drawn the match, the spotlight would have been firmly cast on Rodon and his seeming lack of desire to anticipate a possible rebound.
