The MLS website handed Leeds United midfielder Brenden Aaronson a 4.5 rating for his performance in Friday’s 2-0 defeat to Japan – but it was his side’s second-best rating, with the piece praising Aaronson for his work rate.
Dusseldorf, Germany hosted the friendly clash between Japan and the USMNT on Friday afternoon. Aaronson lasted the entire 90 minutes, after a superb start to the 2022-23 campaign with Leeds – after a move from Salzburg.
But the entire US team struggled. Goals from Daichi Kamada and Kaoru Mitoma secured a comfortable win for the Japanese side, who executed a game plan to perfection. So much so, Aaronson’s side did not have a shot on target.
The MLS site produced a player ratings piece after the full-time whistle and while Aaronson only got 4.5, it was a lot better than his teammates. The report states that Aaronson has become ‘undroppable’, praising his work rate.

“In a lethargic team, Aaronson at least ran himself into the ground. The Leeds man took a beating and drew several fouls, including one that probably should have seen red. Arguably become undroppable over the last 12 months.”

It will have been a frustrating afternoon for the Leeds man. Stuck out on the right flank, away from his usual position as a no.10 for 65 minutes, he struggled to get into the game. He started to come to life when moved into the middle.
His incessant pressing was eye-catching, and his curling shot after some neat footwork whizzed past the top corner. But the entire US side were poor. As the MLS report, lethargic. Much better is needed for the World Cup.
That had a domino effect on Aaronson, who could only do so much. He fed off scraps all game. They will be hoping to put it right when they take on Saudi Arabia on Tuesday evening in Spain, at Real Murcia’s ground.
