Croatian newspaper Sportske Novosti have applauded Celtic defender Josip Juranovic for his performance against Belgium on Thursday evening at right-back – praising his effort as “tremendous”, and playing with a “big heart”.

Juranovic, 27, came into the World Cup in excellent form having clocked up his 50th appearance for Celtic. He has played every single minute for Croatia in their three group games – a 0-0 draw with Morocco, a 4-1 win over Canada.

Then, on Thursday night, another 0-0 draw – this time with Belgium. Croatia came into the game with the knowledge that avoiding defeat would see them qualify for the last 16. They did just that at the expense of Belgium, who are out.

Belgium join Germany and Denmark in the bigger nations who have failed to reach the last 16. Juranovic will now go up against Daizen Maeda on Monday in the first knockout stage. Juranovic was praised for his display against Belgium.

The Croatian newspaper gave him a 6.5/10 rating, writing in a player ratings piece: “Tremendous effort, a lot of running in both directions, defended and rushed forward. Big heart. Jeremy Doku brought problems.”

Celtic defender Juranovic praised for his tremendous effort and big heart

It was a solid performance from Croatia. Given the mindset was that they had to come out of the game without losing, and Belgium had to win, it was always going to swing in the direction of Belgium. But they held out, claiming a draw.

Josko Gvardiol was absolutely sensational in the middle of Croatia’s defence. Luka Modric was glorious in keeping the ball and slowing things down. Marcelo Brozovic and Mateo Kovacic worked their socks off – and so did Juranovic.

Up and down that right flank, he was rarely out of position – but constantly making an impact in both areas of the pitch. 90Min claim West Ham are looking at Juranovic – and David Moyes will be impressed with his performance.
