And the 22-year-old said that initially he was keen on a move to the Riverside, but he got put off, the more he thought about the switch.

“When Middlesbrough came in I thought it was the dream but the more I sat back and thought about it, the more I realised that coming to United was a better opportunity for me and for my career,” Thomas said.

“I had a conversation with Boro but my heart was set on joining United.”

Thomas’ form in League Two this season with Hartlepool has caught the eye.

The youngster could not stop Pools from heading for the drop, but the was the most talented player at Victoria Road.

Thomas will now be hoping that he can make the step up to Championship with Sheffield United.

Middlesbrough, meanwhile, will be forced to look elsewhere for additions.

Boro are expected to be active in the transfer window, as they seek an immediate return back to the Premier League.
