James Maxwell has confirmed his Rangers exit on a permanent basis with a post on Instagram – prompting Nathan Patterson and Andy Firth to react. Maxwell leaves Ibrox after three years at the club.

Maxwell, 20, joined Rangers in 2019 after spells with Ayr and Falkirk during his academy days – and immediately become an important part of the club’s second string. He then went on loan in 2020.

The England-born left-back joined Queen of the South in 2020-21, having a hand in seven goals during 32 games for the Championship side. In 2021-22, he returned to boyhood club Ayr for the season.

Again, he enjoyed another impressive campaign in Scotland’s second tier, scoring six goals and laying on four assists in 37 games. But his Rangers contract has expired and he has confirmed his exit on Instagram.

Maxwell confirms Rangers exit: Patterson and Firth react

Despite his form out on loan, clocking up 69 senior appearances while with Ayr and Queen of the South and having a hand in 17 goals – Rangers chose not to renew his Ibrox deal. He joins Firth in leaving.

Indeed, goalkeeper Firth leaves Rangers after just one senior outing in three and a half years. Maxwell is more than likely to attract suitors, given his Championship form. Perhaps one of his old loan sides will come calling.

Firth responded to Maxwell’s post, as did Alex Lowry and Everton defender Patterson.
