De Laurentiis made a phone call to Benitez regarding any interest in taking over Napoli at the end of the season, according to the report.
It has also been reported that while the former Liverpool and Real Madrid head coach was surprised at the phone call, he did not say yes or no to the prospect of becoming the next manager of the Serie A outfit.
Worrying for Newcastle United?
Napoli are a massive club and could well end up winning the Scudetto in Italy this season.
Benitez was in charge of the Neapolitan club from 2013 until 2015 and did relatively well during his time there.
With Napoli set to play in the Champions League next season, it could be tough for the former Chelsea boss if he gets a concrete offer from Napoli.
True, Benitez loves Newcastle and the fans adore him, but if he is not guaranteed funds in the summer transfer window to make the Magpies a competitive side in the Premier League next season, then the Spaniard could well look at other options.
