Napoli are fighting hard to be able to keep Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina permanently, but his wages are a significant stumbling block.
Pepe Reina was excellent while on loan to Napoli from Liverpool last season and the Italian side are determined to keep him if they can.
It appears that Reina doesn’t have a long-term future at Anfield and a deal between the two clubs appears to be reachable.
Last season Reina was earning just over £4m, which wasn’t affected by his move to the Stadio San Paolo.
However, Napoli aren’t able to match that sum for the 31-year-old, who is under contract at Liverpool until 2016 and need Reina to agree a pay cut.
While Reina enjoyed his time in Naples by all accounts, it may be too much to ask for him to reduce his salary by enough to fit within Napoli’s pay structure.
Even if Reina decides he doesn’t have a place in Liverpool these days, he is likely to find he has other potential destinations who may be able to meet his wage demands.
The Corriere dello Sport reports that Napoli are determined to find an arrangement but are being forced to consider making do with their other three ‘keepers Rafael, Roberto Colombo and Mariano Andujar.
