Liverpool have struck gold in the transfer market in recent seasons, signing Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

One player they missed out on was Polish talent Piotr Zielinski.

Zielinski came close to signing with Liverpool in 2016 and was keen on a switch.

He was quoted by the Liverpool Echo claiming Jurgen Klopp wanted him badly and even met with him, but Napoli paid up the £13 million while the Reds’ lower offers were rejected.

At this stage it seems a blown opportunity for Liverpool.

Piotr Zielinski of SSC Napoli in action during UEFA Europa League Round of 32 match between Napoli and RB Leipzig at the Stadio San Paolo on February 15, 2018 in Naples, Italy.

The 23-year-old has had a good season so far, scoring six times for Napoli.

His manager Maurizio Sarri is a big fan, and talked about him in glowing terms this week, comparing him to Kevin de Bruyne.

Speaking at a press conference reported by Tuttomercatoweb, Sarri said: “He is an absolute talent, he also has great physical skills and if he grows in the level of personality, he can play in any area of the court, the new De Bruyne.”

Zielinski has a long way to go to really deserve such a high accolade but he is still young and has a chance to reach a higher level.

If Liverpool wanted him now then he will be a lot more expensive than the £13 million they could have signed him for in 2016.
