Nacho Monreal – Arsenal’s best defender against Crystal Palace

Arsenal’s previously under-fire Spaniard stood out in their win at Selhurst Park.

Arsenal may have had the woodwork to thank for their narrow win over Crystal Palace, but there was also a steely defensive showing on display too.

After Alexis Sanchez missed a glorious breakaway chance to extend Arsenal’s lead to three goals, Palace came back strong and put the Gunners under real pressure.

The backline held strong, and previously under-fire defender Nacho Monreal was a key part of this.

Playing in his preferred position at left-back after a spell in the centre earlier in the season due to the club’s injury crisis, the Spaniard has been much improved of late, ever since a stellar display in the 2-0 away win over Manchester City.

Against Palace he was no different, and was the only Arsenal defender on the pitch to successfully win a tackle, doing so twice for good measure. He also blocked two goalbound efforts and his four interceptions won were the highest among his fellow defenders.

Monreal may have his limitations going forwards, with Kieran Gibbs more confident going forward, but he has earned his position in the team and continues to justify Arsene Wenger’s faith in him.
