Liverpool target Nabil Fekir starred against Manchester City on Wednesday.
Whilst Liverpool kicked off their Champions League campaign with a rousing 3-2 victory over Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City didn’t have quite so much luck against French opposition.
Roberto Firmino’s last-gasp winner gave Liverpool all three points against PSG, just 24 hours before City came up short against Lyon at the Etihad Stadium.
Maxwel Cornet and Nabil Fekir put Lyon 2-0 up, and whilst Bernardo Silva pulled one back for City, Lyon held on for a shock victory.
The star of the show was playmaker Fekir, who has now hit four goals and one assist in six games in all competitions this term, proving why Liverpool wanted him this summer.
The 25-year-old was a top Liverpool target this summer, and whilst a deal appeared to be close, the move fell apart, seemingly with the Reds attempting to renegotiate the fee due to concerns about Fekir’s knee.
However, Fekir continues to dazzle for Lyon, and he showed by taking down City that he could be Liverpool’s title X-factor if they can finally land him in January.
Whilst Chelsea are impressing under Maurizio Sarri, the title battle is expected to come down to Liverpool and Manchester City, with any slight advantage potentially crucial.
Fekir’s superb showing against City showed that he could help Liverpool take down Pep Guardiola’s side, and with Liverpool open to major January spending for the right player having landed Virgil van Dijk in January of this year, Fekir should be a top target this time around to give the Reds an edge in the title race.
